This number, "Tricks Ain't Walkin' No More", was first done by Curley Weaver in 1935. Memphis Minnie also did a version of this song. The Hokum Scorchers recorded this in 1990 for their first cassette. I'm playing the washboard and cups and Lou Reimuller is playing the National Guitar. I just updated my website player with a new Hokum Scorchers' song: Listen to "Dusting the Frets" originally by the Dallas Jamboree Jugband (1935), adapted by the Hokum Scorchers (w/new lyrics) from their "Yanna's Donut" album of 1995. This version has Lou Reimuller on National guitar, vocals, kazoo; Amy Crehore (me) on washboard w/ vocals, kazoo.

Okay, I got lazy on Sunday night. A fan from Germany wrote me and was disappointed that there wasn't a new song to listen to. So, here is my Sunday night song, "Combo Waltz" performed by the Hokum Scorchers. This was originally a Memphis Jug Band song. Here's another quickly scanned detail of one of my new paintings, a version of "Bubble Gum Encore". It took forever to get that cat just right. Using tons of rich oil paint.
I was lazy on Sunday night and I didn't upload a new Hokum Scorchers song. Been working too hard at painting. I'll have two shows in July, one in NYC and one in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel (M Modern). I'm also going to release a new print very soon, so watch for that.

I just changed the song on my website player. Listen to the "Jackson Stomp" performed by Lou Reimuller of The Hokum Scorchers. This is Charlie McCoy's arrangement that he recorded in 1930 with Walter Vinson as the Mississippi Mud Steppers (C. Davenport tune - "Cow Cow Blues"). Lou Reimuller recorded this amazing song using a National mandolin and a National guitar in 1992. (The Hokum Scorchers put this song on their "Feed the Kitty" tape.)

Sam Chatmon and Hokum Music

In 1990, the Hokum Scorchers recorded a song called, "The Leads All Gone". It was originally done by Bo Carter (a.k.a. Bo Chatmon) in 1931 as "My Pencil Won't Write No More" and later it was recorded in 1980 by his brother Sam Chatmon on Flying Fish Records as "Pencil Lead Blues".

Luke Jordan (1892-1952) was a blues guitarist and vocalist of some renown in his local area of Lynchburg, VA. "You May Go, but This Will Bring You Back", was originally done by the Memphis Jug Band in 1930. The Hokum Scorchers' version has Lou playing a vintage National mandolin. I am playing a National plectrum guitar. The actual instruments we used are shown in these photos. We recorded this song in 1995 for our Yanna's Donut tape.

I love this photo by Robert Doisneau. Femme Femme Femme is blogging some classic B&W photos. They also just blogged my Memphis Minnie painting along with some photos of her.
I basically majored in photography and film in college and I really love the drama of black and white images! Perhaps I will upload a Memphis Minnie song (by the Hokum Scorchers) to my website music player next Sunday. Meanwhile, it looks like my music page has recently gotten "stumbled upon" which is always a nice bonus.

From the Hokum Scorchers' "Feed the Kitty" album comes a wonderful song- originally done by Hudson Woodbridge (a.k.a. Tampa Red 1936)- called "When You Were a Girl of Seven". This version was recorded in 1992. Lou Reimuller plays the National guitar, sings and plays kazoo. Amy Crehore is on a vintage tenor banjo. Scroll down for the music player on this link:

I'm going to try rotating different Hokum Scorchers songs on my website every Sunday night - just for fun. Have a listen to the Hokum Scorchers playing the 1920's song, "Papa Do Do Do" by Papa Charlie Jackson (this version was recorded in 1995). Lou Reimuller is playing a Vega Whyte Laydie guitar-banjo and I am on the washboard. I will be playing snare drum, tenor banjo, National plectrum, kazoo and singing on future songs. The link wasn't working this morning so I deleted my blog post from yesterday. But, it seems to be working now, so here it is again -a link to thumbnails of Yazoo album covers and comic covers mostly by Robert Armstrong and R. Crumb. It's a picture search for Hokum Boy's music. Lou Reimuller, luthier and creator of Teenar, Girl Guitar, is allowing me to post a little preview of Teenar in her new "updated" outfit. She never ages and is just as beautiful as ever. Out of the 1980's and into the 21st century! Teenar, Girl Guitar is having a resurgence of hits on my blog from Japan - mostly coming from www.hiroburo.com- one year after I inititally posted about her (perhaps because J-walk blog recently picked up my old post).

Lou Reimuller is also building my new Tickler Ukuleles. The #2 Tickler Uke will be revealed sometime in January. He's the other half of the Hokum Scorchers (photo link).
