Tickler Ukulele #3 -Paint Job (Crehore)

I've already shown you glimpses of my custom-built Tickler Ukulele #3 in progress, but here's a peek of the actual headstock being painted.
The bottom photo shows a test strip of a few do-dads painted on a sample piece of maple.
Lou Reimuller (luthier) did the most beautiful job building this wonderful concert ukulele and it is really getting to the final stages now. Yes, it has been slow going, but this uke is special.
I just hope my paint job will live up to the rest of the amazing and intricate details on this uke.

Tickler #3 - A Concert Ukulele (Crehore)

Tickler # 3 is getting near the point where I will soon be painting the top and headstock. This is a photo of the bridge being set up. As you can see, the bridge is made of carved ebony (lovingly carved by luthier Lou Reimuller) - it is my original design, as is the uke itself. There will be bridge pins and a saddle, so this is just a glimpse of what it will look like. There are also many other great features that this photo doesn't even begin to show. I will reveal them a little later on. Stay tuned!

Photos of Lou Reimuller's work bench (luthier).
Lou has worked so hard on this and his craftsmanship is near perfection.
Here's the link to a couple more photos of this # 3 uke in progress on flickr.

Also, Link to Tickler #2 which is a soprano pineapple model (that I designed and Lou built).

What Am I Reading?

I received these two books in the mail from Amazon yesterday.
GOYA by Robert Hughes and Los Caprichos, Goya's etchings (a Dover book).
The actual Robert Hughes book was cheaper than the kindle version.
A beautiful book it is, with illustrations throughout.
This will be a good excuse to shut off the television and the computer at night.
I miss Robert Hughes and I know these two books about Goya will inspire me.

P.S. As you can see, Little Hokum Rag looks totally different now! My list of blog links disappeared and I will try and get them back. I also lost my feedburner counter which showed that I had almost 13,000 readers. I do think that you will find this blog easier to read and to navigate. The archives are still intact, so all is well....I hope you will continue to follow my future posts and read the old ones as well. Thanks! Amy

My Green Duco Vintage Ukulele

Nip-Cat Design for headstock of vintage green duco ukulele 1920's, copyright Amy Crehore

Back of my green duco-finish uke from the late 1920s. Click to enlarge.
There's a beautiful green duco-finish vintage ukulele in my collection that I am getting ready to enhance. I won't touch the back and sides, but I have something in mind for the headstock and part of the front. Here's my pencil sketch for the headstock design. I call it my "Nip-Cat" uke. I scanned the back of the actual uke on my scanner bed. You can see the gray and green crystallized finish. This baby was found in it's original Montgomery Ward mail order box and had never been played.
More of my hand-painted fine art ukes can be found here , here and here. Some are vintage and some are built from scratch. My Dreamgirl's gallery show in L.A. last year featured 13 of them including another duco (a black one) called The Demon.

What am I up to?

In progress -painting detail- by Amy Crehore
I have been working like a dog on secret projects. There are shows coming up in Miami and L.A. and all of my efforts are going into painting. I can barely keep up with emails or my blog, but I am doing my best. Here's a partial peek at painting I am working on. It is only half finished. I am working on a zillion things all at once, so this hardly shows what I am really up to. However, I do not want to ruin any surprises, so I am keeping a lot of it to myself for now. I will reveal more later. I just wanted to give you something to look at and look forward to. The Art of Amy Crehore
