Amy Crehore at Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea, Milan, Italy May 25-July30, 2017

Via Solferino 44 | Milano
UPCOMING SHOWS

Opening
Thursday 25th May, 6.30pm

- YOU MAY NOT BELIEVE IN MAGIC...
Amy Crehore, Ilaria Del Monte, Camille Rose Garcia, Anne Siems

curated by Michela D'Acquisto
Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea is proud to present You May Not Believe In Magic..., a group show curated by Michela D'Acquisto.

The works of the artists Amy Crehore, Ilaria Del Monte, Camille Rose Garcia and Anne Siems are permeated by a subtle atmosphere of mystery that subverts the ordinariness of the scenarios depicted, positioning them in the liminal territory where appearance and reality, blending, coexist.

It is a not easily definable quid that which, subtly insinuating itself within compositions rendered with detailed accuracy, lends a disorienting quality to the otherwise lucid representation of the world: a confluence of magical elements, ascribable as much to the literary genre of fairy tale as to popular folklore and myth.
The timeless harmony of the depiction is disturbed by details that transcend the rules of logic; we are therefore in the presence of works that superimpose sensible reality and visible reality, thus revealing the wonderful aspects of the latter and making the hidden structures that govern it undeniable – «you may not believe in magic but something very strange is happening at this very moment» [1]

Heirs of Magical Realism, the genre that, starting from the twenties of the last century, has been emphasizing the intrinsic wonder of the world, the artists are influenced in the same way by Neue Sachlichkeit and Valori Plastici, by Jorge Luis Borges' stories and Dino Buzzati's ones, revisiting these suggestions according to their own style: the resulting works invite to an awakening of the sensibility and propose a vision of the world mediated by the sublime.

In the gallery will be present paintings, works on paper and hand-painted ukuleles.

"Snake Tamer's Ditty" painting by Amy Crehore (sold)

"Snake Tamer's Ditty" 12" x 24" oil on linen by Amy Crehore 2007
One of my larger Monkey Love paintings"Snake Tamer's Ditty"
will be headed to Seattle this week to the home of a collector of mine.
I will be sad to see it go.
This painting was shown earlier at Ad Hoc Gallery in Brooklyn, NY
and at The Shore Institute of Contemporary Art in NJ.
It was also featured on boingboing .
I painted my first monkey with a sailor hat in 2002.
That painting had a little girl in it.
It was printed in the award book "American Illustration".
In 2005 & 2006, I did a series of monkey love
paintings for Blab! art shows in L.A. (Copronason). They were
also shown at Applegate Gallery (Santa Monica)
and Roq La Rue(Seattle) and M Modern (Palm Springs) galleries.
Most of the monkey paintings sold quickly. Many right off my easel.
One became a framed print available through Pressure Printing.
I made others into giclees available on my website.
 There were also some works
with monkeys in my solo show at Thinkspace Gallery in L.A. (2009)-
including some antique ukuleles.

Starting new work

If you have been following my instagram , you may have
seen my latest works in progress.
I sketched an intuitive piece in pencil first.
Then I did a drawing in conte crayon (not yet finished) and
moved on to oil on linen this week. I also tried it in gouache last week, but did not like the results.
It is an interior scene with figures which I drew from my head. (No models or references.)
I am continually working on new things and I'm excited about an exhibit in Tokyo that I was invited to participate in (this summer). More about that later.

Sorting through Archives (Illustration)

Stacks of Playboy Magazines from 1991 - 2002 that my illustrations are published in.
A spread I did for Playboy, issue Jan 1992. My photo appears in the middle of the Playbill.
Here's an example of an illustration I did for Esquire magazine in 1991.
A story by Robert Stone (who just died this year).

I have done plenty of illustration work over the years for magazines and book publishers.
Just look at the stack of Playboys alone that my work has appeared in (above). Eleven years of regular assignments.
Kerig Pope at Playboy was the first art director for a "big" magazine to call me in 1991, followed by Rhonda Rubenstein at Esquire.
I have many more big name magazines and drawers of original illustrations to
sort through and catalogue like the example of Esquire above.
Right now, my website shows only part of my career history
with an emphasis on my fine art.
I am working on it and I am working on writing a better bio of my entire art career.

Two Balthus Shows in NYC

BALTHUS
Untitled, c. 1999–2000
Color Polaroid

© Harumi Klossowska de Rola

Beautiful polaroids (late studies) by Balthus at Gagosian Gallery
and a new Balthus show at the Met for those lucky enough to be in NYC.
Judith Thurman writes for The New Yorker blog about meeting Balthus in Rome 40 years ago and also posing for his wife (who was also a painter). Interesting! LINK
I love the paintings and drawings of Balthus, as you know if you read this blog.
P.S. Picasso owned a Balthus painting

Twitch Uke Paint Job (Crehore)

I took this photo with my ipad in my new studio. I think the paint job is now complete
on my Tickler #3 Twitch Concert Uke. It is time to hand it back over to the luthier for the final touches. There is a green and black inlay at the bottom. I'll take some better photos later on.

Girls with Ukes

"Song of the Wind" (SOLD) 2009 6" x 6" oil on linen by Amy Crehore

Another new collector came along and snagged this little painting last week. One of the girls in the painting is holding a round camp uke. This piece was part of my Dreamgirls and Ukes solo show in Los Angeles.
This week, I am working on an illustration job and trying to finish up the new "Twitch" ukulele. I will show my finished paint job soon, so please stay tuned!
